KNOW YOUR OPTIONS

Laser Gum Surgery (LANAP®) Vs. Traditional Gum Surgery

Gum disease can quickly affect your healthy smile, leaving you with bleeding gums, bad breath, and gum recession and, without treatment, you could lose your teeth and bone. In spite of this, more than half of American adults suffer from this chronic infection. For patients in need of periodontal treatment, it is important that you understand the important differences between traditional gum surgery and the LANAP® procedure so that you can choose the best option for you.

In traditional surgery, the doctor uses a scalpel to peel back gum tissue for better visibility and access to the periodontal pocket. The doctor will then cut down and suture the gums to decrease pocket depth; this is what causes the aesthetic alteration of your gum line. Once the pockets have been cut down, bone or tissue grafting may be used to reattach the gum to the tooth’s root surface.

The LANAP® procedure is a less invasive than traditional gum surgery for treating gum disease . Rather than a scalpel, the LANAP® procedure uses laser technology to gently remove diseased tissue and harmful bacteria from the gums. LANAP® does not require the cutting of gums to decrease pocket depth. There is little to no gum line recession nor is there aesthetic alteration of your smile. After cleaning the pocket, the laser is used to compress gum tissue against the root surface. The pocket is sealed with a fibrin clot rather than surgical glue or sutures. As a result, the patient benefits by having a decreased risk of infection, sensitivity and post-surgery bleeding. LANAP® patients can expect a recovery time of 24 hours with minimal discomfort.

It is important to understand that LANAP® is the only laser procedure proven to regenerate bone.

While some severe cases of periodontitis necessitate traditional surgery, LANAP® is generally a viable, less-invasive alternative for most patients.  If you have gum disease but have avoided treatment due to the lengthy and painful recovery times associated with traditional gum surgery or you experience dental anxiety, the LANAP® procedure may just be right for you.
